Hi friends,

Recently my server has been slowing down and so I decided to format the operating system and re install afresh. Afterwards i decided to run  quest recovery manager for active directory forest edition.

I want to recover the active directory domain service. I am hoping  I will view the comparison reports and see what objects and attributes  have been deleted or changed in active directory to enable efficient, focused recovery at the object or attribute level.

In the process, I encounter this sort of an error message which am hoping somebody understands and will get me help as  soon,

Windows Server Backup

The backup contains Active Directory Domain Service which can be recovered only when the computer is started in Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM). Retry the system state recovery operation from DSRM.

I have read through several forums and still not found conclusive solution to this sort of error. With the previous installation, I have never encountered any problem while running this recovery manager.

Anyone with any idea how I can go about this.

Please help.

Thank you.

When you try to recover active directory domain service and you are in full operational mode, the rule is that you will not be able to recover it because the active directory domain services is already in running. You can not recover active directory domain service while the service is running. That's why the restore process is failed and the error message is displayed.

The message actually says that you have to go to Directory Services Restore mode and perform you restore operations.

You have to Press F8 button after rebooting your machine and then using Active Directory Restore mode from the menu. You have to provide the active directory restore mode password. And then perform the restore operations.

Thank You.

You have to reboot the computer in Directory Services Restoration mode. When the computer is booted, there should appear a menu on the screen that shows different options for booting. One option is the above one. As you boot that you shall find a list of available boot options. As you boot you will get a screen from where you can do the required tasks you require. If there is only one OS loaded, then you have to keep pressing a key line Esc or F8 or Del or some thing like that as and which  depends on the boot program you are using.
Thanks.
