Hi,

The purpose of ScanDisk is to diagnose your computer. It checks your hard drive, detects error and repair it. ScanDisk usually runs during start up when you did not properly shut down your computer or when you had a bad sector on your hard drive or corrupted windows file.

To avoid this issue, make sure that you shut down your system properly. Never unplug your computer directly from the power socket. Also, it is advisable to connect your computer to a UPS (Uninterrupted power supply) in case a power failure occurs. It is also advisable to run this ScanDisk once in a while.

This problem usually happens when you did not properly shutdown your computer during the last session or when you last used it. When this happens, Windows automatically checks the hard drive for inconsistencies because the system detected that Windows was not properly shutdown during the last session. This is normal and should be expected to happen only once and will stop checking after you restart again the computer.

But if the machine permanently runs scandisk every time you start your computer then this is a different story. This could indicate a problem with your hard drive. If you have an older hard drive installed on your computer, you should check it using any disk utility software to check the health of the hard drive. It’s possible that you have a failing hard drive and that scandisk scanning during startup is the sign of the imminent problem.
