In recent years, I have been hearing more and more about NFC technology for mobiles phones and even access cards. Can anyone explain to me what does NFC stand for? What are the main uses for such a technology in the actual world? How do I use it to connect my mobile phone with others?

Hello,

NFC (near field communication) is a group of theories and various technologies that allow certain devices, including mobile phones, to communicate with each other over a radio connection through physical contact or close proximity. It has many uses, but main common uses are for purchases and ticketing/access. The only thing you would need to do to connect your phone to others is install an appropriate application and follow the instructions.

The term “NFC” stands for “Near-Field Communication”. It is a set of communication protocols that allow two electronic devices to establish communication by bringing them within 4 cm of each other. It offers a low-speed connection with simple setup that can be used to bootstrap more capable wireless connections. Devices that support NFC are often portable devices like Smartphone.

NFC-capable devices are used in contactless payment systems like the ones used in electronic ticket smartcards and credit cards and allow mobile payment to replace or supplement these systems. NFC is sometimes referred to as “NFC/CTLS” (Contactless) or “CTLS NFC”. Aside from using it in contactless payment systems, it can also be used for social networking, for sharing contacts, videos, photos, or files.

NFC-enabled devices can also serve as electronic identity documents and keycards.
