You have asked a good question and as well as a great answer posted here. Antivirus protects computers  from Virus, Trojan and any related computer bugs on the Internet.

Wikipedia explains: This software can remove malware and other computer related bugs that infects computer hard drive and prevent further damage.This should give us an idea how important it is to have this software installed in our computers. This protects us and saves our files without risk.

Macafee, Avast, AVG, Norton, Kaspersky are good examples of Antivirus software that promises protection to our computers at home. This should give us confidence to access Internet without hesitations.

It is a nice question. I think, Antivirus is a program like another computer programs. This program prevents our computer from virus. There are many bad programs that damage our computer. Antivirus is a program against that program. Antivirus searches that programs and take proper step. Antivirus is a helpful program.
