When you receive error code “80004002” when trying to install a Windows Update, try this workaround. For this to work successfully, you need to disable your Windows Firewall. But you can also try it with Windows Firewall turned ON but if the error keeps coming back, you should turn off Windows Firewall. To begin, click “Start”, “All Programs”, “Accessories” then right-click “Command Prompt” and select “Run as administrator”.

In the command prompt window, type the following then hit Enter after every command:

  • regsvr32 wuapi.dll
  • regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
  • regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
  • regsvr32 wucltui.dll
  • regsvr32 wups.dll
  • regsvr32 wups2.dll
  • regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Note: when doing this, some of the DLLs may not be found. Just continue regardless of the error. After you finished registering the DLLs, try Windows Update again then see if it works.
