Unknown Foreign Letters on Word 97-3003 Documents

I am using MS Word 2007 and I cannot view 97-2003 Word documents in usual way. I can open the file, but the content is encoded in foreign letters which I don’t understand. I tried opening the file on other computer and different version of MS Word but the error is still there.  I need the file as soon as possible, so if anyone here can help me open it correctly, please do so. Thank you.

Are you sure that the file that you are opening is not a higher version? Or the file that you are opening is can read by Microsoft word? If so then maybe the file that you are opening is corrupt. Try to open the file in another coding, or try to open it in another program like open office. Open office can also open Microsoft word files. I am not sure what foreign letters are you talking about, but if it is like a weird characters I conclude that the file is corrupt or it is in higher version than the program the you are using to open it.

Hello James,

Ensure that you have saved your document in the ms document 97-2003 compatibility format to be able to successfully open it on other computers that may be having different versions of ms office. Otherwise you will continue receiving the error.

Especially if you are using ms office 2003, the error is likely to occur until you save the document in the word 97-2003 compatibility format. You can also choose to upgrade the versions of office that are on the other computers that you are using to a higher version like office 2007 or office 2010 which will not necessarily require that you save in the compatibility format.
