Using Ubuntu(as Guest OS) in Virtual Box. Not able to play WMV file. I think some problem is in my Ubuntu or in my Virtual box because same is happening for all different media players like real player and vlc etc. Also this is happening in case of WMV file only. Suggest some solution for this issue if possible.

Before you can play a WMV file on your Linux Ubuntu, you first need to install Ubuntu Restricted Extras. To do this, open a terminal then run the following command then press Enter:

  • sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

When it prompts you for a password, enter your administrator password and then press Enter to continue. See image.

After that, on the main menu, go to Applications and then select Ubuntu Software Center. In the search box, enter without quotes “totem” and then hit Enter. From the result, click Install on Movie Player. See image.

During the installation, it may ask you again for the password. Enter the password again to continue. See image.

After this, the application will be installed. Now, to use the application to play your WMV file, go to System, Sound & Video, and then select Totem Movie Player. Load your file into the player and you should be able to watch the video.
