I recently felt Samsung S3, I have is showing lesser signal. I complained with my service provider about this. Naturally they denied any system failure from their side. Now is there a way to measure android gsm umts rf signal strength by myself using the phone so that, I can directly deal with the Operator Customer care, explaining the signal loss. Hope someone come forward with a solution.

Yes, there are so many apps available in Android market for measuring and tracking the GSM/3G umts rf signal. One of the app is ADVANCED CELL NETWORK MONITOR, that I am also using in my Xperia mobile. Advanced cell network monitor gives the information of surrounding base including cell id's, LAC, signal strength level. This app easily work on GSM as well as 3G networks, but neighboring cells are shown only in GSM network. This app uses Google Geolocation to define approximate cell address. An additional information for Samsung user's, this app works inconsistent on SGSII and Galaxy Note. Below are the snap-shots of app:

If you think your phone keeps receiving low signal reception, the main cause is probably the type of network you selected on your phone. There are different types of network that you can select for use on your phone like Edge, CDMA, 3G, and 4G. The type of network connection available depends on your phone.

If you keep receiving low signal on your phone, try checking the type of network connection used on your phone. Like for example, if the phone is set to 4G, try shifting to 3G manually or set the connection type to automatic. When the network connection is set to automatic, the phone shifts between available network types automatically depending on which signal is the strongest.

To help you track which signal is the strongest in your area, try downloading RF Signal Tracker. The app is kind of outdated though. The latest version is 1.3.2 updated on June 30, 2010. It requires Android 1.6 Donut and higher. This is rated 3+. Another app that might be useful is Network Cell Info Lite.

The latest version is 4.21.3 updated on March 23, 2020. It requires Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and higher. This is rated 3+.
