After updating my PC to Windows 8.1 from 8, there were persistent sound problems. So I reverted to Windows 8, but the problem remained. So I uninstalled the Realtek drivers to install again. But now, on trying to install, I’m getting the error code 5009: 0x8002802b. I am frustrated. Can this be fixed?

This error means there is a fault with your PC configuration. Try the following steps:

  • Open Run dialog box from the start menu.
  • Type in MSCONIG.
  • System Configuration will open. Choose Selective Startup under the general tab.
  • Tick all the options. Click OK.

It seems you forgot to restart your computer after uninstalling the driver for your sound card. Hardware drivers require a system restart whether you are installing or uninstalling the driver. Setup will not finish updating the system if you don’t restart the computer and that’s why this error happened.

Like what you said, after downgrading your operating system from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8 because of sound problems you decided to uninstall the sound card driver. But then, when you uninstalled the driver, I think you forgot to restart the computer and installed the driver back right away. This will not work and will cause further problems.

What you need to do is to restart the computer and then try installing the sound card driver again. This should fix the problem. Now, if you still have problems with sound, it’s either the driver you installed is not fully compatible with your operating system or your sound card is broken or failing.

Visit the sound card manufacturer’s website and download an updated version of the driver that is compatible with Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
