In Microsoft Office 2010, is there a way to protect the files from being seen by an unauthorized person? How do I set a security on my files which I have created from Word and Excel? If another version of the office is used, will it open the file or will it remain protected?
Putting security on Office 2010 files
In Microsoft Office products you can protect your files by setting a password. Open the document you want to protect, click File > Info > Protect Document.Â
Other versions of Office can't open it also. The problem – if you forget your password, it can't be retrieved.

Another solution may be in using file archiver/container programs (zip/rar) and setting a password for the archive. It may be more protected from unauthorized persons (they can't even see names and format of files), but should be zipped/unzipped every time you need the file(s).
