There are various types of virus may attack our PC.

how will we be safe when we are online?

Use online scanner when you are in online. The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free online service. It surely helps to you identify and remove virus from PC. Automatically increase your computer performance.

You can also try different online scanner

You must not open unfamiliar sender email and email attachment because its spread virus. You can block the dangerous attachments by using Microsoft Outlook and Windows Mail.

You can use pop-up blocker. It appears on the top of website. Pop-up blocker helps to you prevent malicious. Internet Explorer has a Pop-up Blocker facility.

Windows Firewall can give alert about suspicious activity. It blocks virus, when you are doing download activity.

You are right regarding one thing, as with time internet has taken over nearly everything, online security measures have become important more than ever. People are busy scamming others of their money and valuable information and viruses are their chief tool.

Use an updated anti-virus and make sure you enable its browser plugins, this scans all the sites before opening them. Also take note of the source and its quality before installing a software into your computer as it may be at worse a key-logger that will store your key strokes and all your passwords will be compromised.
