Problems with Android test version of Facebook messenger

Hi,

I have a few questions regarding the newly released Android test version of Facebook Messenger. Does it send messages to non-messenger users? What mechanism does it use to send the messages? And do non users have to register on Messenger only through a mobile number?

Problems with Android test version of Facebook messenger

As you know, Facebook has recently rolled out a major update to their Messenger app. Like you could guess, some are loving it, others – not so much.

 

And here is the reason why.

 

The new version of the app has access not only to your Facebook contacts, but also to all the people in your phone's phonebook – even those who you are not friends on Facebook with.

 

You asked whether it sends messages to non-messenger users. And the answer is yes. 

 

The new Facebook Messenger app uses your contacts' phone numbers to message them. 

 

The cool thing is you could completely forget about SMS and send your friends texts for free, because the app sends messages over WiFi. This comes in handy if you're worried about bills and taxes. However, if you use cellular, taxes are still applied according to your contract.

 

The "not so cool" thing is that Facebook is now able to read not only what's in your account, but also contacts' personal information on your phone. They can now pinpoint who exactly you are communicating the most with and thus refine your News Feed and ads targeting. 

 

Non-facebook users can still receive your messages as a regular texts and if they register on Facebook, they can start using the Messenger app the way you do.

Problems with Android test version of Facebook messenger

Hello,

The new Facebook messenger for android is still on test by experts. Yes, you can send messages to non Facebook users. You just need to have a contact number for messaging to non Facebook friends. This app ask you to confirm your phone number for verifying process. A bit like whatsapp messenger, you can connect easily with this new user-friendly application.
