First thing that you need to know is what exactly cloud is. A cloud based application can be used by anyone. If a vendor is providing any cloud based service then we need to check what service he is providing like getting a server of theirs. If you get a server of theirs in a cloud for rent you can do whatever you want till your end date of agreement. Just install whatever OS you want install whatever tools you want. So, Cloud is thing where you can have access to various applications at once. There is open source cloud also available.

Since you are looking for open source clouds, here are several. OpenStack is a worldwide partnership of cloud computing technologists and developers creating the ever-present open source cloud computing platform for private and public clouds. The OpenStack project is aimed at distributing solutions for all kinds of clouds. OpenStack was established by NASA and Rackspace Hosting and it has grown to be a global software community of developers working together on a massively scalable and standard open source cloud operating system.

Its objective is to allow any organization to develop and offer cloud computing services that runs on standard or average hardware. To know more about OpenStack, visit OpenStack Cloud Software. Apache CloudStack is another brand of open source cloud computing. It is an open source application developed to deploy and administer big networks of virtual machines as a highly available and scalable IaaS or Infrastructure as a Service cloud computing platform.

It is utilized by several service providers to offer public cloud services. It is also being used by many companies to give an on-premises cloud offering or as an element on a hybrid cloud solution. Apache CloudStack currently supports the most common hypervisors such as Xen Cloud Platform or XCP, VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, and XenServer.
