Hello Tracey.

It all depends on what type of NFC function you want to use. 

For "active" NFC functions like, for example, viewing smart tags and connecting to a smart accessory, you have to turn on the NFC technology feature as well as your Blackberry phone's backlight. 

For "passive" NFC functions such as payment transactions, you may use NFC technology on your Blackberry phone even if your phone is locked, its backlight is not turned on, or your phone is powered off (either because it was intentionally powered off or the battery has no more charge). Whenever you attempt a payment transaction via NFC technology, you will be prompted to enter a password or PIN that corresponds to your credit card or payment application.
