My Compaq screen just went off and will not power on when I restarted my machine. What could be the cause? I have checked for loose connections but all seems fine. What else can cause such a problem ? I need to know if the screen may need a replacement or possibly is just a glitch.

Hi Nicholas,

You could do the following steps to troubleshoot if it is really your screen or your CPU.

1. Try to plug it to another PC. If it works then there must be somehting wrong with your CPU. It might be your video card or your CPU might not working at all.

2. Try to change power cable. In some cases, power cable loosens due to usage.

If non of these works, you will need to bring your monitor to the nearest repair shop. There's also a possibility that the power regulator is busted and has to be replaced.

If your monitor suddenly went off and would not turn back on, try checking the power cable. If there seems to be no problem with the cable, try using a different power cable if you have an extra. You can also use the power cable of your CPU for checking.

Standard CRT monitor

Shut down your CPU first then unplug it from the power and disconnect the cable from the CPU at the back. Connect the cable to your monitor then try powering it up. If the problem is with the cable and not with the monitor, it should turn back on. You should see the LED indicator in front activated.

In normal operation when it is connected to the CPU, its color is green. But if the CPU is not running or the monitor cable is unplugged from the video card at the back of the CPU, the LED indicator is orange. But whatever color it is, the LED should be activated. If still it is not activated even after pressing on the power button, it is probably busted.

You should bring it to a service center for proper servicing.
