My less than six month old HP computer, has Windows 7 for the OS. I was looking through my computer seeing everything that it came with. I can't remember where I was or where I saw it, but I came across once screen that showed this: OS————Windows_NT. I've been trying to find it again. Does that mean something other than somehow I have NT as part of my OS also?

Windows NT ('New Technology') is actually the name of the family of operating systems that Windows 7 is under. Simply put it is the basis for all Windows operating systems. The different Windows OS's (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and so on) are merely versions of Windows NT. To be specific, Windows 7 is actually Windows NT version 6.1.

To view that area again where you saw Windows NT as your OS, you can follow these steps:
1. Right click on My Computer.
2. Click on Advanced System Settings on the left hand side.
3. Go to the Advanced tab.
4. Click on the Environment Variables button.
5. Under System Variables, scroll down and you will see that your OS is Windows NT.

There is actually nothing to worry about since Windows NT is the name or term being used to the family of Windows operating systems created by Microsoft such as Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Vista, Windows Home Server, and Windows Server 2008. These operating systems are in the family of Windows NT even if they are not branded as such. The first version of Windows NT had been released back in July, 1993. Its features are quite similar to Unix, an operating system developed by AT&T employees, and is created to set off versions of Windows for consumers which are dependent on MS-DOS.

Windows NT is a line of operating systems developed by Microsoft which started in Windows NT 3.1. Beginning in Windows 2000, the “NT” label was removed from the product name and just included in the product version string. From Windows 2000 onwards, all are Windows NT-based operating systems. That’s why you see the “NT” label in some screen you viewed because Windows 7 is a Windows NT-based operating system.

Windows 7 is formerly dubbed as “Blackcomb” and later codenamed “Vienna.” It is an operating system designed for personal computers developed by Microsoft and part of the Windows NT series of operating systems. It was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009 and on October 22, 2009 for public availability. Its release happened less than three years after Windows Vista was released.

Because of the poor critical reception on Windows Vista, its release was basically designed to be an incremental update to the operating system while maintaining hardware and software compatibility.
