This problem can be caused if your computer does not support, much memory which you attempt to add. Another cause could be that your memory  is not setup properly in CMOS and if your computer memory is bad.

Whether memory is properly setup and detected within CMOS can be verified; if not,  you should reset the memory according to the CMOS report. Make sure that the computer is capable of supporting the memory amount you are attempting to add. If your computer cannot support the amount of memory, you can try to have a BIOS update from the manufacturer of the Motherboard or computer.

Hello Mike,

First thing, you should do is open the inside of the computer and use a blower to blow off any dust that might have settled on the motherboard hence blocking the RAM chip slot on the motherboard. The slot has contacts and when dust settles on it then it will not be able to successfully detect the RAM that you have just put in.

Another possible cause of the problem could be that the RAM you are trying to use is faulty, the sensitive contacts have been tampered by either touching them or dropping the memory on the ground.

Also make sure the key notch position fits well in the slot.

Hello Mike,

Check to ensure that you are using the right memory. If your computer is currently using a DDR memory, make sure that you upgrade using another DDR memory. But if it is using an SDR memory then ensure that you upgrade using another SDR memory. For the DDR make sure that you get the right on from either DDR1 or DDR2.

The images below will assist you to distinguish between the SDR RAM and the DDR RAM memories:

DDR RAM                                                         SDR RAM

The DDR has one notch while the SDR RAM has two notches.

Hello,

If the computer does not detect new memory, maybe the memory is not setup properly in the CMOS.  Check the memory if properly fixed and reset the computer and you will see the report of the CMOS.

Make sure the memory supports the motherboard to your computer because some computers do not support higher memory like the 128 to 512MB of memory.  It could be possible that the motherboard may have an update, accepting more memory to the computer.
