Microsoft Security Essentials cannot be updated

Unfortunately, there is no way you can disable Microsoft Security Essentials from auto updating. The automatic update function of Microsoft Security Essentials is not done, actually, by the antivirus itself but by the operating system because Microsoft Security Essentials automatic update is handled by Windows Automatic Updates. So, the only way you can disable or prevent Microsoft Security Essentials from auto updating is to disable Windows Automatic Updates.

To do this, click Start, Control Panel, and then Automatic Updates. Switch to Classic View to find it. In Automatic Updates dialog box, select “Turn off Automatic Updates” then click OK. See image.

After this, Microsoft Security Essentials will no longer update by itself. But even if you do this, you still need to update your antivirus because you will not be protected against the latest threats if you will not update Microsoft Security Essentials. To do the updating manually, you need to download the latest virus definition for your operating system.

If you are using x86 Microsoft Windows, download Microsoft Security Essentials Latest Virus Definition [32-bit]. If you have x64 Microsoft Windows, download Microsoft Security Essentials Latest Virus Definition [64-bit]. Once the download is complete, just double-click on the installer to update Microsoft Security Essentials with the latest virus definition.
