For your requirements, there are two gadgets available, which can be downloaded from the Windows Live Gadget Gallery. They are called Outlook Appointment and Outlook Tasks. These two can be used independently, without opening the actual outlook program.
The calendar shows 3-5 appointments, with emphasized color coding. They can be clicked for opening in the original outlook program.
