Windows Defender is designed for Windows 8.x and Windows 10. Though you can also install it on Windows 7, it will only provide you spyware protection and not the complete malware protection. If you have Windows 8 or higher, you should find its icon on the system tray.

You don’t need to actually install Windows Defender if you have Windows 8.x or Windows 10 because it comes pre-installed with the operating system. If you have Windows 10, Windows Defender appears as a shield icon on the system tray. If you have Windows 7 or Windows 8.x, you may see a castle icon.

If the Windows Defender icon has a small cross on the bottom right corner, it means Windows Defender is disabled. To check if it is disabled, click on the icon to launch Windows Defender. If you can’t find it anywhere on the system tray, click “Start” then in the search box type without quotes “defender” then select “Windows Defender” from the result.

On the next screen, you should see the red “Turn on” button if Windows Defender is off. If you see this, just click the “Turn on” button to enable Windows Defender. Note: Windows Defender disables itself automatically if you have installed another antivirus like ESET Smart Security, Norton Security Deluxe, and others. If you want to enable and use Windows Defender, you have to uninstall your existing antivirus program.
