The Microsoft Exchange Server or Microsoft Exchange is an email, calendaring, scheduling, contact, and collaboration platform developed by Microsoft and deployed on the Windows Server operating system. It is intended for use on a large enterprise or a business. It was designed to allow users to have access to messaging platforms on Smartphones, tablets, web-based systems, and desktops. Microsoft Exchange Server’s telephony capabilities support voice messages.

Users collaborate by means of document sharing and calendar. The platform’s security and storage features allow organizations to archive content, execute compliance tasks, and perform searches. In Microsoft Exchange Server 2016, it features two server roles: the mailbox server and the edge transport server. The edge transport server role defends the organization from attacks. This server is deployed outside the corporate firewall to manage every internet-facing message traffic.

It also provides centralized control over message flow to protect the system from malware and spam. Microsoft announced in March 2017 that it would deprecate the edge transport server role on Windows Server 2016 because of technical conflicts but it will continue to work on other Windows Server systems.

The mailbox server role joins the client and mailbox access roles that had been separated in previous versions of Microsoft Exchange Server.
