I am wanting to set up my first server but I am limited to only having a older Dell laptop. Is is doable to put Linux Red Hat on and build a dedicated server. Would we need to do anything else to the laptop to keep it from crashing? More RAM or a external HD?

Laptop As A Linux Server?

Hello,

Short answer is yes– it is doable as long as your laptop have a Dual Core processor, 2 GB RAM, and more than 25 GB Hard Drive. Long term, I won't recommend you having this kind of setup as the device is not equipped with features to function like a server.  e.g. HDD Redundancy, PSU Redundancy, Multiple Storage etc.,

But if you're really into this plan, I suggest you increase the RAM to 16 GB and possibly replace the processor with a Quad Core processor.
