To know whether my port is open or closed

I am using Windows 98 and I cannot see my control panel, with the use of a website, having online services.  To do that, I require ports 8087 and 8088.  But I try accessing it online from another computer, which runs MAC and there I can access the control panel and both the computers are linked with a wireless router.

Kindly let me know the problem here.

Many internet service providers, especially for residential accounts, would block certain ports to prevent spread of Malware and viruses through the network.

If you are in an office environment, your computer administrator or the network administrator may be the ones who would block certain ports on your network or the computer, so as to keep it more secure and to have more control over the computer or the network.

This is also aimed to prevent spread of viruses and Malware, just the same as the internet service providers, and prevent others from 'spying' on the other users. To check your ports, click Open Port Check Tool

That should give you an idea if the port is closed or if it's open.
