You might be installing a customize windows service pack 3 that doesn't allowed any upgrades but rather format already.

Solution 1:

Do a fresh install of the operating system in your computer, but make sure to backup all of your files that is important to you.

Solution 2:

Buy another CD or just use Service Pack 2 CD. You can choose from the two but I think I would go to Service Pack 2 and then just update it or download the service pack 3 upgrade package. And also buy a genuine operating system so that it will not be detected as a counterfeited software.

Solution 3:

You can also try cleaning your CD drive and CD Rom first before doing any of the stated above solution.

There are many reasons that can cause this problem. First see your installation disk that whether it has scratches or not if it has the problem, then the problem is that your CD player can’t read the disk so error occurred. So bring another disk to install windows. If you see that your CD disk is OK so it is a problem with your CD drive because your laptop is old your CD drive is also old so it can’t read the disk properly. So you can buy another CD drive and your installation will go normal. That’s all but I recommended you to buy an external DVD drive.

If you have Microsoft Windows XP and you want to upgrade it to Service Pack 3 but upgrading the operating system triggers an error, check that your computer is running on at least Windows XP Service Pack 2. If the installer doesn’t run and it seems to be corrupted, there is a problem with the installer. Try downloading a new installer. Download Windows XP Service Pack 3.

This is the latest and last Service Pack update for Microsoft Windows XP. The Microsoft Windows XP operating system was released to manufacturing on August 24, 2001 and generally released for retail sale on October 25, 2001. After twelve years (12 years), the extended support for Windows XP ended on April 8, 2014. After this date, the operating system stops receiving further support or security updates.

As of August 2018, Windows XP is still popular in several countries with up to thirty-six percent (36%) of the Windows share.
