For users who still don’t know, Microsoft Windows 8.1 is not a new version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Windows 8.1 is just a Service Pack update for the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system. Unlike the success of Windows XP which users loved for many years even until now that it is no longer supported, Windows 8 is Microsoft’s another failure just like what happened to Windows Vista.

Codenamed “Blue,” it was released to manufacturing on August 27, 2013 and on October 17, 2013 for general availability. This is only less than a year after Windows 8 was released. Updating to Windows 8.1 is free if you have a retail copy of Windows 8 and Windows RT and you can get the update from the Windows Store.

In Windows 8.1, the “Backup and Restore” feature which is available in Windows 8 is removed. This is the backup component of Microsoft Windows that had been deprecated but was made available in Windows 8 via the “Windows 7 File Recovery” in the Control Panel. Windows 8.1 adds support for 3D printing, tethering, Wi-Fi Direct, NVMe, pairing with printers by means of the NFC tags, and Miracast media streaming.
