I want to use my iPod as remote control for ‘Apple TV’. But when I am trying to do this, it seems to just give access to the library of Apple TV like in the iPod. I need help to use it like original Apple remote control, just like the touch screen to use for browsing YouTube applications.

Please provide me some ideas.

Hello, there are two generations of Apple TV. The software version of first generation is 3.0.2 and the second generation is 4.0.  Your iPod remote app shall be compatible with the first generation of Apple TV though it may not support Home Sharing.

To set-up the remote app, please follow these steps.

  1. Connect your iPod touch and iPhone to a WiFi network while your Apple TV shall connect to the same local network.
  2. Open remote app on the mobile handset.
  3. You shall find the ‘Add iTunes Library’ in remote setting screen. Select it. A 4-digit password will be then displayed.
  4. In main menu of Apple TV, select Settings >>General >> Remotes. If the area is grayed out, then you shall repeat steps 2 and 3 again.
  5. Select your iPod touch or iPhone.
  6. Enter 4-digit password. Use arrow keys on the Infrared Apple Remote to change the password. Click Done.

Hello, To use the iPod to remotely control Apple TV, you must reconfirm that the installed remote app in the iPod device could also be used on Apple TV.

Then you must make sure that your Apple TV and remote app meet the minimum system requirements, connectivity as well as settings. Moreover, the iPod and Apple TV shall have same network otherwise the Apple TV could not be controlled via iPod. If the devices are all logged on same network then the network name would be same. To find out the network name, please navigate below locations for every device.

For iPod : Settings<<Wi-Fi << ‘Network name’.
For Apple TV: Settings<<General <<Network <<‘Network name’.

Ideally both devices shall be using same VPN and connected to same router so that both are isolated from outside to prevent any disruptive connection. Also, if your router is using a guest account, then you have to reconfirm that all devices are connected this guest network.

Hope this could help. Thank you.
