I’m receiving the error message “Error 1721

Hello,

I’m receiving the error message "Error 1721. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." for a MSI I have built using version 7.0.0.0 for Windows 98.

The older version has been removed before the new MSI was installed. I have also tried different settings for the MSI, for example, no mirror drive.

Does anyone know how I fix my MSI so that it starts working?

Hello Samantha,

The following is a procedure that will help you resolve that issue:

• You will need to start your computer in Safe mode and then follow these steps:
  • Restart the computer.
  • And then after the BIOS information has been displayed, you will need to press F8.
  • You will then use the DOWN ARROW key to choose Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
  • And then use the UP ARROW key and the DOWN ARROW key to choose your computer, and then press ENTER.
• After that, you will need to log on to the computer as a local administrator.
• And then you will click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe, and then click OK.
• Go to the command prompt, and then type msiexec /unregister , and then press ENTER.
• Still at the command prompt, type msiexec /regserver, and then press ENTER.
• At the command prompt still you will need to type exit, and then press ENTER to close the command prompt.
• After that you will get rid of the software program from Add or Remove Programs.
