I forgot to turn off my laptop inside my bag. Heat

I had once traveling thru public bus and I forgot to turn my laptop inside my bag. As I took it from my bag I felt it was heating specifically the bottom part of the lap along with the battery. What would be the possible damages this may cause?

Your laptop might be in trouble, if you could still turn it on, that’s good. If that’s the case, while your laptop is rebooting, check for any slow response when running a program installed in your system.

I don’t think you will have a problem even if you forgot to turn off your laptop inside your bag while traveling because it will go to standby mode. Of course, you will still feel heat at the bottom part of the machine because the laptop is still running but not completely.

In a laptop, when you close the lid or you put the screen down while it is running, the machine will go to standby mode or sleep mode automatically. In this state, the machine is still operating but at a very minimal state. In Microsoft Windows, there are two sleep options available: Hibernate and Stand By. Stand By is the more traditional sleep mode.

This type of sleep mode lowers down the power your computer uses to almost nothing. When you’re in Stand By mode, the power to your peripheral devices, hard drive, and screen gets cut off but the power to your computer’s physical memory or the physical RAM remains allowing your files to stay open.

In Hibernate, the computer saves an image of your desktop which includes all open files and windows and then it shuts down your computer. In laptops, hibernate mode doesn’t happen automatically. You have to select it manually to activate it. On the other hand, standby mode is automatic. When you close the lid of your laptop, the machine will go to standby mode automatically.
