Internet Connection will only work on Safe Mode

I lost my internet connection on my other computer. It only lets me access internet, if I boot to safe mode.

My security software is turned on, so I don’t think it’s because of a virus or Malware. It is one of those old Dell Optiplex systems and not under warranty anymore.  So I cannot get support from their tech support without paying a fee for support.

What else can I do, aside from system restore and OS reinstallation? I don’t have the OS CD anymore at hand.

Please help me if you can. Thank you so much in advance.

Hello Richard,

I have read the problem that you have with your computer and there are just 3 reasons why it won't work on the normal start up.

(1) If the computer is infected by a spyware or a virus, that is blocking the internet from working;

(2) If the virus protection that you're using, is no longer functioning well and that could also block the internet connection;

(3) If there are conflicting software on the computer, like if you have installed a software recently and its not compatible with the other software on the computer.  What happens in such cases, is that there will be some software that might be corrupted or blocked from being accessed.

I will suggest installing this software and have a full scan of the computer and then try rebooting the computer in the normal start up.

  1. Open 'Internet Explorer'.
  2. On the address bar or the http bar at the top, type: malwarebytes.org and then hit ENTER.
  3. Click on the link for downloading it and install it on the computer.
  4. Once it's done installing, you will see its icon on the desktop screen, we need to open it up and look for 'full scan' and click it.
  5. This will scan the computer for 30 mins – 45 mins depending, on the volume of programs installed on the computer.
  6. Once its done scanning the computer, you will see all the viruses and spyware that are detected on the computer.
  7. Delete everything and restart the computer.

Here are some of the information that you might need to know more about safe mode with networking and what’s the use of it.

  • Safe mode is a diagnostic mode of a computer operating system (OS) and can also refer to a mode of operation by application software. It is intended to fix most, if not all problems within an operating system like internet related issues, such as viruses blocking the internet from working, software conflicts on the computer and some other issues that can only be fix through safe mode.
  • If the computer is infected by a virus you can do the above troubleshooting and after scanning the computer, you will need to install your own virus protection on the computer so that the computer will be protected from such issues.
  • After doing the solution above and its still not working, you may want to have the computer checked by a local computer technician, so that we can check which of the installed programs on the computer, are conflicting with one another. There could be another virus protection on the computer that’s having conflicts or if updates are having issues with software installed on the computer.

Hopefully this had at least helped us resolve and identify the issue of the computer.
