I just got an HTC one m8 and the first feature that stroke me was the presence of an IR blaster. I heard that it can be used a universal remote for both T.Vs and other related peripherals. Is there any other use of this feature? Can I, for example, reprogramme the phone to act as the remote for my garage door?

IR blaster(Infrared blaster) is a powerful application that gives functionality of the remote. This application uses infrared to control the devices which are normally controlled by remote control key presses.

Normally this can be used to control T.V, DVD, VCR etc electronics devices. The application can change the T.V channel remotely like a remote does. It can also change the song on the DVD.

Yes you can use this technology and create something great which can be used to open a gate remotely. But for that you need to install hardware in your gate as well as you need to modify the IR blaster to make it powerful. If you know the android programming you may start working on it. Resource will be available in android development kit. The technology will be the same just use the hardware on the gate in a way that once the hardware is activated it will start some motor. That motor will be connected to the gate plate in a way that it can close or open the door in reverse to the present condition.
