I am facing issues with my Windows updates. For one of the update in my system, it is stating windows update error code 80072f78. I have to update this feature for accessing several utilities in my system.
If someone knows a way to solve this error, please provide your valuable suggestion for the same.
Here is one of the simple solution to your problem.
Error code “0x80072f78” is a Windows Defender error. You normally get this when you try to update Windows Defender. If you encounter this error, try using the System File Checker utility. Press the Windows key then type without quotes “cmd” in the search field. Right-click “cmd.exe” in the search results then select “Run as administrator” to launch an elevated command prompt.
In the command prompt window, type the following command then hit Enter:
sfc /scannow
Insert the Windows installation CD or DVD when you are prompted then continue. Wait until the process is complete. When it is finished, restart the computer. Windows Defender comes pre-installed on Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 including Windows RT and Windows RT 8.1. If you’re on Windows 7, the best to install is Microsoft Security Essentials if you want a Microsoft antivirus.
Windows Defender is also available on Windows 7 but unlike Microsoft Security Essentials which will give you complete protection, Windows Defender will only provide spyware protection on Windows 7. If you’re on Windows 7, download Microsoft Security Essentials according to your language. Now, if you have Windows Defender and it doesn’t start, the main reason is if you have a third-party antivirus installed on your computer.
Microsoft Windows is designed to detect the presence of security applications installed and when it detects a third-party antivirus or internet security program, Windows Defender will shut itself off. If the problem continues, just download the update manually. Go to Security intelligence updates for Windows Defender Antivirus and other Microsoft antimalware and download the version for your operating system.
This should allow you to update Windows Defender manually.
