If you want to install a CD drive or an optical drive on your computer, you have to install it in the BIOS and not in Microsoft Windows. Just like a standard hard disk drive that needs to be detected in the BIOS, an optical drive also requires this. Windows will not be able to install the hardware if it’s not first detected properly in the BIOS.

To go to the BIOS, restart your computer then press DEL or DELETE on your keyboard when you see the POST screen. In the BIOS, look for the section that shows the settings for your drives. You should see “Primary Master,” “Primary Slave,” “Secondary Master,” and “Secondary Slave.” Now, since you want to install an optical drive, you can set it in “Secondary Master.”

Set optical drive in the BIOS
Set optical drive in the BIOS

Select your optical drive in the “Secondary Master” dropdown list. When you are finished, save and exit BIOS and then boot your computer. The optical drive will now be accessible in Windows.
