Hello,

First you need to have an idea of four key things that are required in setting up an access point:

  1. Network SSID which is the name to be given to your particular network.
  2. Network Infrastructure which you choose to implement.
  3. Security type which is basically the security settings that you will implement to protect unauthorized access into your network.
  4. Internet Protocol or IP address that will enable you connect to the internet.

You will need a device for setting up your wireless connection which is the Router. Most routers are compatible with the wireless in built drivers that come together with the software package in your case Vista. Windows opens up or you a device configuration page that you will manually configure your device to the settings that i highlighted above for you.

In Network and sharing page, you should activate the network discovery so that you get to see other computers that will connect to your network.

To use LAN settings, you should have an Ethernet cable that you will connect your router to your vista PC. After that put the IP address into the LAN settings. Most routers come with default settings that i highlighted above, therefore its highly recommended after connection you change them to protect against unauthorized access.
