Hi,
I have some documents which were created in MS Word 2007. My laptop has MS Word 2003 and when I tried to open these documents, they refused to open and an error message was displayed that showed something to do with decoding. Â
Could someone kindly assist me on how I can solve this?

Hi Julie,
The problem you having is that when those files were created
The were saved to open with 2007 and newer versions of MS-Word.
You may consider installing a copy of MS-Word to your computer, or
downloading a copy of portable Microsoft office suite. This is aÂ
portable version of MS-office suite with all the applications like
word,excel etc.
You don't need to install portable version, just run it and will open
with out installing it.

What i would advise you to do is ask the sender who sent you that particular document to save it in  1997-2003 word and re send it  cause if you don't have ms 2007 on your laptop then am sorry it wont open

How to open MS Word 2007 documents using MS Word 2003
Microsoft Word 2007 are not compatible with earlier versions of Microsoft words because they have a .docx format. I and many others think that the Microsoft company did it for people to purchase the latest versions.
But  there are still people who are using the earlier versions, due to that fact the Microsoft company made the Microsoft Office Compatibility pack for Word, Excel and Powerpoint 2007 file formats.
By using the Microsoft Office Compatibility pack, we can open Microsoft Word 2007 documents, we can also edit some items and save Microsoft Word 2007 documents in the previous versions of Word.

How to open MS Word 2007 documents using MS Word 2003
Hello Julie.
The documents are not able to open because of the format that you have saved them in. To make the documents that you create in word 2007 be able to open in ms word 2003, you have to save them in the compatibility format:
-
Just open the document in word 2007 and
-
Then click on file in the ms word menu and then choose save as.
-
Choose word 97-2003 from the list of formats and
-
Then click on save in the window that will open to save the document.
That way, when you use ms word 2003 to open the document you will not have the trouble like the one you are having right now.
