To start Windows XP installation from CMD follows these steps:

  1. Insert the Windows XP CD drive.

Start CMD. If your computer does not have MS-DOS already installed:

  1. Start the SMARTDrive if it is not already started. Go to the folder that contains the Smartdrv.exe file then type smartdrv and then press ENTER. This will copy SMARTDrive files to your hard disk.
  2. At the command prompt type name of CD-ROM drive (example: “F:”) and press ENTER.
  3. Type cd i386, and press ENTER.
  4. Type winnt and press ENTER. This will start the Windows setup program.
  5. Type the path where the Windows XP installation files are present on the disk and then press ENTER. (example: type “d:i386”)
  6. You will then get this message:

The MS-DOS based part of The Setup Program Is complete.
The Setup program will now restart your computer. After your computer restarts,
the Windows XP Setup program will continue.

  • Press ENTER to restart your computer and continue Windows XP Setup.
  • The XP installation will start as it does from Windows installation.
  • Now follow same steps as for normal XP installation.

Thanks.
