How do hotels track internet activity over WiFi. In order to keep up with times I am planning to have free WiFi in my small B&B for the guests but would like to keep a tab on things that are happening.

Yes, it is possible to track internet activity and WiFi is the easiest way. You have to check on your router's settings and then set to track all the activities. But make sure that your Firewall is set to enabled for your own security so nobody can steal or exploit your data.

Hello,

You can use one of many WiFi sniffers. They just read whatever pass over your WiFi so you can keep track what your guest are searching. Although this can be illegal if used on wrong way, but it can be useful for purpose like your. I recommend using Elixar: http://www.elixar.com/corporate/history/airtraf-1.0/

It's easy to use and it's free.

Hi there,

it depends what you are trying to do.

If it is only about the quantity of download / upload, the router statistics menu should be sufficient.

You can allow access per MAC address (unique identifier for each computer / smartphone connected) and

some routers provide statistics per MAC address.

Access to the router is http://192.168.0.1 or .1.1 or .2.1 (depending), (tab log).

I suggest you enable a password to avoid your guests fiddling with your router.

If you want more detailed (and intrusive) info, there are a few solutions:

The MING network spy monitors all data transmitting via the WiFi connection. This includes emails, web browsing, FTP (downloads), social media, etc.. Check it out at    http://netspy.mingsoft.com

There some paying software for that on www.filebuzz.com/files/Wifi_monitoring/1.html

The best software you can find is Mysuperspy:

www.mysuperspy.com

Be mindful that monitoring internet activity on a provided telecom service might not be legal. Please seek advice.

Hope it helps,

Cheers,

Jack
