You need to restore your dell laptop when your PC might give you problems in running. Restoring will delete all the files from C drive. It is recommended to back up all your files before the process, so that all your important data is not lost. For Windows XP:

1) Turn on your PC.

2) Press ctrl + F11, till the DELL logo appears.

3) Click on restore->enter.

4) A message will appear, informing about the data loss incurred with the factory reset settings.

5) Confirm it.

6) The process might take 8-20 minutes. Message informing that ‘system recovery is done successfully’ will appear. Click on finish. Your PC will restart.

For Windows7/Vista:

1) Turn on your PC.

2) Press F8, till the DELL logo appears.

3) You will be redirected to ‘Advanced boot menu’.

4) Select ‘Repair your computer’. Enter the administrative password.

5) From the options listed, select ’Dell factory image restore’->Next.

6) In ‘reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition’ tab select Yes and then next to start with the factory restore.

7) Click on finish.

Your PC will restart.

Unfortunately, you cannot do that on a computer. Unlike with Smartphones that can be reset to factory defaults, you cannot factory reset a computer because there is no such thing. If the infection on your computer is so severe that it damaged the operating system, the best way to deal with this is to format the system drive and install a fresh copy of the operating system.

To make sure your computer is already clean, download Sophos Virus Removal Tool and install it. Once installed, start Sophos then wait for the virus signature database to get updated. When updating is complete, click to start scanning your computer. Sophos scans everything on your computer including external devices connected via USB port.

When a virus is found at the end of the scan, remove or delete it then repeat the scan over and over until it no longer detects a virus. See if this works.
