If you are running windows 7 or Vista, as soon as you plug in your mp3 player in the USB, the PC will start auto-detecting your mp3 player and install its required drivers. (you will see a tiny icon in the windows taskbar on the bottom right corner)

Soon after, your device's icon will appear in 'my computer' as a removable storage device. You can access it through there.

In case you do not see the icon after a few minutes then it is a driver issue and you will need to install drivers manually by downloading them from the manufacturer's website or installing them from the provided CD.

Most mp3 players now a day's are plug-n-play, means they don not require manual installations and windows detects them automatically.

After you have turned on your computer, wait a few seconds until your desktop loads and Windows informs you that it recognizes your new hardware (the MP3 player) and that it is ready for use. The installation with your PC is complete. But If it does not recognize automatically, which I guess that is what happened in your case,

Install the software by inserting the software CD that came with the MP3 player and any software package that came with it.

Check the installation by attempting to transfer files onto the player. Navigate to "My Computer" and open up the MP3 Player by double-clicking on its icon. Drag music to try and listen to it.
