For security reason, I have given a password in BIOS but I forgot it. Now, I was unable to open my computer. Some people told me that you have to change your motherboard. It will be very expensive for me. Would you please tell me how I can recover my BIOS password?

In order to recover your CMOS password, you need to erase the CMOS memory. To do this, please follow the steps below:

  • Make sure your computer is switched off, otherwise switch it off.
  • Make sure you unplug it from the switch to avoid risk of shock.
  • Open up the case (metal cover of the system unit)
  • Seach on the motherboard for a small battery (CMOS battery)
  • Carefully remove it for about 120-180 seconds (this will flush the CMOS memory)
  • Return the battery and close the computer case
  • Fix the computer back to the switch and power it on
  • Reconfigure the CMOS configuration or restore the default
  • The BIOS password will be cleared and you can boot without it.

You can later reset the password by going to the BIOS configuration and setting a new password.

The easiest way to recover your BIOS password is through removing your CMOS battery located in your motherboard. CMOS battery keeps your computer settings saved even though it is turned off and unplugged. If you removed it the computer will forget its settings, including the BIOS password. You don’t need to buy another motherboard just for this case. Instead, you should need to remove the CMOS battery in it. Before you do anything else, make sure that everything is unplugged. Remove the battery and turn on your computer as soon as you have removed it.
