This technology is at the beginning and the self-driving cars aren't too advanced. These cars can't avoid another vehicle if it doesn't respect the driving rules. The software installed on them can avoid obstacles that appear in front of the car, it can make an overtaking but it doesn't react faster enough to avoid an accident.

It is true that Google made a car that got the first license plate from all the self-driving cars. This car can manage to prioritize other vehicles, it can turn without any problem but it can't find a solution when it sees a human error. This technology will evolve in time and I think in the future we will see cars avoiding accidents and finding solutions when they meet traffic problems.
