If you don’t want to purchase a separate fax machine with a built-in printer to send and receive fax messages, you can also do these tasks from within your computer. But I think you need to purchase a fax software to accomplish this as well as a fax modem if your computer still doesn’t have this hardware installed. It will not be possible to send and receive fax messages without these things installed on your machine.

First thing to do is to check whether your computer already has a fax modem installed.

• Click Start then Control Panel.
• Select Printers and Other Hardware.
• Click Phone and Modem Options then select Modems tab. If your computer is already installed with a fax modem, the device will appear on the window. If nothing appears similar to that, you need to purchase a fax modem as well as a fax software.
• Install the fax modem on your computer. Your computer will automatically detect the device when the system starts. If Windows doesn’t have a built-in driver for it, install the driver that comes with the device when you purchase it.
• Install the fax software after installing the fax modem.
• Open the fax application. To send a fax message, click New Fax and then enter the name of the recipient together with the person’s company name, and the fax number.
• Attach the document you wish to fax then click Send when done. You may also include a cover letter if you like.

In addition, Windows Fax and Scan software is already included if you are using Windows Vista Premium or Business Edition.
