Hi there,

I downloaded and installed Portable Ubuntu on my system. I was able to extract the file to my desired destination.

However it is currently producing a fatal error which I am unable to interpret.

I can still use Ubuntu but there is no graphical interface

Cygwin/X displays the following error "A fatal error has occurred, and Cygwin/X will now exit. Please open/var/log/XWin.0.log for more information.

Vendor: The Cygwin/X Project
Release: 1.7.3.0(10703000)
Build Date: 2009-12-22

XWin was started with the following command-line
XWin :0 -ac -notrayicon -multiwindow -dpi 100"

Thanks,
Edward

Do not extract and install on the destination folder but move the Ubuntu-Tres folder on the root of your C: drive. Cygwin problem always occur due to the distinction on the permitted characters and path length on Windows and Unix OS. If it doesn't work, download and install the Cygwin/X DOS-based version. Download it from the link below:

Copy the Cygwin directory to the TRES directory.

Hello Edward,

The error that you are getting could be due to a binary issue to replace the existing XWin.exe. You will need to try running the new XWin.20110102-git-29db9091c6ae4995.exe and see if it will work well on the server. There could be a problem with a missing font that is causing the text not to display.

You should also try another cygwin installation and see if it will be able to work with the new XWin setup. After that you will need to go back and then try the original system and see if it is now working as it should. There could be a lingering font connection by the previous XWin.exe that is causing the issue.

Regards,

Carl
