Generally, Windows Media Player supports .AVI files.  AVI files are usually comes with a non-Microsoft codec. It seems to me that the codecs to play the file format are missing. Better you check the type of file by checking your file extension. You can do this by right clicking on the file — click on the properties—under the file format you will see  the type of your file format.

Or, re-install your Window Media Player by going to Start and in the search box type ‘Turn Windows features on or off’. Now click on the ‘Turn Windows features on or off’. Search for Media Features and give a check mark in front of the Windows Media Player. Then, restart your computer.

Or, in order to  convert  your AVI files to more compatible Windows Media Player formats e.g. WMV, ASF, and MPG etc. search for  ‘iDealshare VideoGo’ converter.  This can convert  all kinds of AVI files without loss in its quality features.

Or, go for K-Lite Codec Pack which allows playing pretty files in Window Media Player.

And if nothing works, then install VLC Player which supports all files types that Window Media Plays fails.
