Packet-filtering Firewalls they operate at the router. They evaluate every packet received to a set of recognized criterion.
Circuit-level gateways it helps in monitoring the TCP handshaking between the local and remote hosts for determining whether the session started is legitimate. They not only examine each packet, but they also keep the path of whether or not that packet is a fraction of a recognized TCP session.
Multilayer inspection firewalls they unite packet filter with circuit monitoring, though still enabling direct connections among the local and remote hosts, which are clear to the network.
