Upgrading processor from i3 to i7 is possible. All you need to know is the socket of the Motherboard that you want to put your new processor in.

As far as I know i7 sandy bridge 2600 k 3.4 GHz processor uses socket 1155, which is used also by first generation i3 socket #. If you want to upgrade your processor to a new one, you need to first know if your Motherboard socket is compatible to the new processor that you want.

And about saving money? Yes, you can save because it can be possible.

Well it would have been easier to tell, if you would have mentioned which motherboard you are currently using with i3 processor. Compatibility issues depend more upon which socket your current motherboard has.

Core i3 and i5 are compatible with motherboards having socket LGA-1155 and 1156, while core i7 CPUs are compatible only with motherboards having sockets LGA – 1155, 1156 and 1366.

So, check out which socket your current motherboard has and compare it with the above. If you don’t have a motherboard with a socket which is not compatible with i7, then I recommend you to get a new motherboard to avoid compatibility conflicts and performance related issues.

Hello,

The Mother Board can supports Core i7 because the specification of your motherboard is P67/Z68 Series Motherboard (LGA 1155). So they are compatible with each other to your motherboard but it depends on what Sandy Bridge your Core i3 or what series your motherboard is. Also check first, what the specifications of your motherboard are.

This is a list of the requirements for a compatible or sandy bridge for the Core i7 or to the motherboard.

Sandy Bridge

§ Core i7 2600 K – 3.40 GHz

§ Core i7 2600 – 3.41 GHz

§ Core i5 2500 K – 3.30 GHz

§ Core i5 2500 – 3.30 GHz

§ Core i5 2400 – 3.10 GHz

§ Core i5 2300 – 2.80 GHz

§ Core i3 2120 – 3.30 GHz

§ Core i3 2100 – 3.10GHz

Hello Anonymous,

What an excellent question it is, about the core i3 to be upgrade with core i7 sandy bridge 2600 k 3.4 GHz processor.

Well, you can really use this core i7 sandy bridge, if your motherboard supports socket LGA 1155. Just refer to your motherboard manual, regarding the specification. If your core i3 processor model is 2100T, 2100, 2102, 2105, 2120T, 2120, 2125, 2130 then proceed to upgrade the processor to core i7 sandy bridge 2600 k 3.4 GHz.

Furthermore why not go to maximum speed which is the core i7 sandy bridge 2700 k 3.5GHz.
