Hello Cruelladevil.

It is generally a good idea in terms of system security for Autoplay to be disabled.  Most viruses or malware oftentimes get distributed through USB flash disks, USB hard drives or even optical media.

If you have Windows 7, you can disable Autoplay via Start -> Control Panel -> Autoplay and uncheck the "Use Autoplay for all media and devices".  Alternatively, you can select the default behavior for every type of media that you insert such as Audio CD, DVD movie, etc.

To disable the AutoPlay feature temporarily, hold down the left Shift key when you start the CD. If you want to view the contents of the CD, you can go to My Computer and then right-click on the CD-ROM drive and select Explore from the list.

To disable the AutoFeature permanently, follow the steps below:

Disable the AutoPlay feature in Windows XP:

Disable through Windows Explorer

  1. Open My Computer or Alternatively referred Explorer
  2. Right-click the CD-ROM drive or other drive and click Properties.
  3. Click the AutoPlay tab. Within this section you will be able to specify all Windows AutoPlay features.

Disable AutoPlay on CD drive and other drives

  1. Download and install TweakUI.
  2. From the TweakUI interface click the + next to My Computer
  3. Click the + next to AutoPlay
  4. Select Drives and uncheck each drive you want to disable AutoPlay on.
