I have had this Dell Studio laptop for awhile and now can not get into the BOIS. It keeps coming up saying I need a password? Is this set at the factory and shipped with one?  Will Dell have it recorded or did it come in the original paperwork that I threw away?

This will let you reset your BIOS Password on Windows 8.1/8/7/Vista/XP Laptop platforms with the DEBUG function:

1 Restart your laptop in MS-DOS Mode. This can be done by:

  • Pressing the F8 key after the Dell logo fades from the startup screen. Press the F8 key repeatedly, but not too quickly, until a new screen shows up. This screen will be called “Windows Advanced Option Menu”.  If Windows loads normally, the above has failed, and you will need to restart this step.
  • Use the up or down arrow keys until the “Safe Mode with Command Prompt” is selected.  (I am not sure what version of windows you are using, but the words “Command Prompt” will always be included.) Once the “Command Prompt” line is selected, press the Enter button and the DOS startup screen will be open.

  1. When the window shows C:> or the C:Windows> flashing prompt, type the word “DEBUG” and press the Enter button.  A – (hyphen) will appear.
  2. Type in the  following commands, pressing the Enter button after each command.

0 71 ff

Q

  1. After the “Q” command, type “Exit”

After this has been completed, try and enter your laptop in BIOS when you boot it up.  The password prompt that was there before should be gone.
