Can Windows 7 Professional be used to setup a server?

I am running Windows 7 64 bit on my computer. The PC is quite good with a 4 TB hard drive, 16 GB RAM and an i7 Quad Core processor by Intel. I am looking to setup a server in a laboratory of about 20 computers. Can I use my current computer with the current Operating System to setup a server for the lab? Do you recommend buying the server edition of windows to setup a server? Or will the current PC do my job?

You can use Windows 7 as a server but as per your setup Windows 7 will not support it. Your computer specs is great but as you mentioned you are looking to setup about 20 computers in a laboratory and Windows 7 only support maximum of 10 concurrent connections. So meaning it will only allow maximum of 10 IP addresses to connect at the same time for file sharing, printer sharing and any type of connection. If you really want upto 20 or maybe more it is best to use the Windows server version since it support unlimited concurrent connection as per designed.
