I'll suggest you AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition which is a 4 cores processor and default speed is 3.2 GHz. Motherboard for this processor will be Socket AM2+ DDR2 or Socket AM3+ DDR3.

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black edition is much better than Intel's i5 2400, because AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition has unlocked multiplier which make over clocking really easy. You can over clock it up to 3.8 Ghz without increasing the core voltage. Secondly, AMD is a lot cheaper than Intel. AMD is faster than Intel.

Overall AMD has best performance than Intel. So go for AMD.

Good Luck!
