Are window updates really necessary?

Hello! I just installed Windows 7 on my computer and I turned off the automatic windows update. But the icon on the right bottom corner of my desktop keeps on saying to turn on the windows update. Its from the windows action center. Is the automatic windows update necessary for the computer or not?

Windows update is used to forbid unauthorized users from fermenting flaws in Microsoft software to access your computer. Thus, it is necessary to update if this is your purpose. 
 
When fixing troubles or enable new features in Windows or other Microsoft software, you can choose those that are not security related Windows update. 
 
But you are not required to do update just to make Windows to work.

Receiving frequent Windows update are sometimes really annoying. Microsoft, updates or makes changes to its windows to keep it safe.

Windows updates, fixes several issues like security issues, issues with the operating system and many other such issues. Not installing them may lead to virus attack or any malware software may find it's home to reside in.

Though you might not see any improvements at the user end but definitely internally your computer is protected and its performance is increased. Though all the updates are not necessary to increase your PC performance, or to protect it, such updates can be uninstalled later.

Windows update is used to improve the security and fix bugs reported by users. It is necessary as you may found that some problems cannot be fixed if you do not update it. However, if you do not concern about the security and also you do not have any problem with using the Windows, you may close it. But it is not suggested.

Yes, it is important that you install the updates via the Windows Update because these updates are meant to improve the performance of the operating system by fixing the bugs and also to patch security holes to improve the security of the system. But it is not necessary to install all the Windows Updates and it will not harm you if you don’t install them.

You can disable the Windows Update but don’t disable the Windows Firewall because this is your operating system’s primary protection against unauthorized access.
